Rotation-induced superstructure in slow-light waveguides with mode-degeneracy: optical gyroscopes with exponential sensitivity
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study wave propagation in a rotating slow-light structure with mode degeneracy. The rotation, in conjunction with the mode degeneracy, effectively induces superstructure that significantly modifies the structure’s dispersion relation. It is shown that a rotation-dependent stop band is formed in the center of the slow-light waveguide transmission curve. A light signal of frequency within this stop band that is excited in a finitelength section of such a waveguide decays exponentially with the rotation speed and with the coupled resonator optical waveguide’s total length or total number of degenerate microcavities. This effect can be used for optical gyroscopes with exponential-type sensitivity to rotation. © 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 120.5790, 230.5750.

The Electrodynamics of Rotating Slow-Light Waveguides with Structural Disorder – Optical Gyroscopes, Degeneracy Splitting, and the Creation of a Dead-Zone
The effect of structural disorder on the electrodynamics of slowly and rigidly rotating coupled resonators circular waveguide is studied, in the rotating system rest-frame. When stationary and ideal, this waveguide supports degenerate modes. It is shown that slow rigid rotation as well as structural disorder can be viewed as two competing symmetry-breaking events. Hence both cause splitting of ...
متن کاملSplitting of microcavity degenerate modes in rotating photonic crystals—the miniature optical gyroscopes
A manifestation of the Sagnac effect in a rotating photonic crystal that contains a microcavity with degenerate modes is explored. It is shown that generally rotation can cause the resonance frequency to split into M different frequencies, where M is the order of the stationary-system mode degeneracy. The results are derived using a new rotation-induced eigenvalue theory that holds for any two-...
متن کاملPerformance comparison of slow-light coupled-resonator optical gyroscopes
We investigate the connection between group velocity and rotation sensitivity in a number of resonant gyroscope designs. Two key comparisons are made. First, we compare two conventional sensors, namely a resonant fiber optic gyroscope (RFOG) and an interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (FOG). Second, we compare the RFOG to several recently proposed coupled-resonator optical waveguide (CROW) gyr...
متن کاملRotation-induced evolution of far-field emission patterns of deformed microdisk cavities
A critical issue that hinders the development of chip-scale optical gyroscopes is the size dependence of the Sagnac effect, which manifests as a rotation-induced phase shift or frequency splitting between two counterpropagating waves or resonances, and is proportional to the size of the optical system. We show numerically and theoretically that the far-field emission patterns (FFPs) of optical ...
متن کاملSlow light, open-cavity formation, and large longitudinal electric field on a slab waveguide made of indefinite permittivity metamaterials
The optical properties of slab waveguides made of indefinite permittivity (ε) materials (IEMs) are considered. In this medium, the real part of the transverse permittivity is negative while that of the longitudinal permittivity is positive. At any given frequency, the IEM waveguide supports an infinite number of transverse magnetic (TM) eigenmodes. For a slab waveguide with a fixed thickness, a...
